The release of radioactive materials has to be prevented for the safety of the public and environment even during a core-melt accident. The safety of a nuclear power plant is becoming increasingly important over time. This study is expected to contribute to analyses of a steam explosion for a severe accident management strategy. The fragmented mass of corium in an explosion phase and the distribution of steam fraction are the main parameters for the total load of the steam explosion. The impulse of a steam explosion under the condition of a corium jet falling into water without a free-fall height is bigger than that under a free-fall height.

The TEXAS-V code was used for simulating the phases of premixing and explosion, and the load of a steam explosion was estimated based on the pressure variation. The entry velocity of a corium jet for the scale of the test facility was varied to simulate the two plant conditions. In this study, the analyses for steam explosions were performed for the conditions of a partially flooded cavity and a submerged-vessel in a pressurized water reactor. To prove the integrity of the containment during the ex-vessel steam explosion, the effects of water conditions on a steam explosion have to be identified, and the impulse of a steam explosion has to be exactly assessed. The overall numerical results show good agreement with the qualitative and quantitative behavior of the velocity results and flame front propagation.A steam explosion in a reactor cavity makes a mechanical load of the pressure pulse, which can result in a failure of the containment isolation. Furthermore, the simulations were able to capture the interaction between the flame and shock wave which was generated by the turbulent deflagration flame and reflected at the end of the ENACCEF2 tube. Turbulent flame acceleration phase in the acceleration tube was well predicted. The presented simulations were performed using a custom-built turbulent combustion OpenFOAM solver based on the progress variable model. This paper presents post-benchmark simulations of the selected ENACCEF2 facility premixed hydrogen combustion experiment. The benchmark was based on the experiments performed in the ENACCEF2 facility. Recently, the French MITHYGENE project consortium and the European Technical Safety Organization Network (ETSON) organized a benchmark on hydrogen combustion to identify the current level of the computational tools in the area of hydrogen combustion simulation under a severe accident typical conditions. In order to estimate possible loads generated by the hydrogen combustion, reliable numerical tools are needed to simulate the deflagration process. In the containment hydrogen would form a combustible mixture, posing a deflagration or even detonation risk threatening the integrity of the containment.
